To Become More Successful, Become "Slightly Famous."

Joan Walsh, business coach and consultant, has become a celebrity. Have you heard of her? No? Okay, I admit that she's only "slightly famous." You see, she wrote a book titled Ready, Set, PLAN, Go!, Strategies to Accelerate Your Success, and she's become well known in her field. But I'll let Joan tell you about it in her own words.

"Michael, working with you on my book - Ready, Set, PLAN, Go! - has been the one of the best moves I've made at this stage in my career. The impact in terms of visibility and credibility has been huge. Now when I'm introduced to people, I'm not only a business coach and consultant, I'm also an author. As a direct result of the book, my speaking engagements have increased almost 50 percent. Many of the organizations who invite me to speak buy my book and give it to the attendees. That, of course, brings in additional revenues and further promotes my services. On several occasions, it's opened doors to profitable new business. In fact, before the first copy of the book was in my hands, it had already brought in two new consulting contracts that more than paid for its cost."

Joan D. Walsh, Co-Founder

If you are an entrepreneur, small business owner, consultant, coach, or business professional of any type, your success depends to a significant degree on how well you are known and respected in your field. According to Steven Van Yoder, author of Get Slightly Famous: Become a Celebrity in Your Field and Attract More Business with Less Effort, one of the best ways to increase your visibility, credibility, and profitability is to become an author.

When you write books, articles, and white papers, people see you as an expert. New opportunities open up to you. People who read your book will come to you predisposed to buy.

Writing and self-publishing a book is not difficult with the assistance of a professional writer/editor. But before you start writing, you need to have a clear vision of what you want to say, to whom you want to say it, and why they would want to read it. That's why I suggest that you download and read my free white papers:

Oh, one more thing. When you become a celebrity, send me an autographed copy of your book!

Wal-Mart Makes Me Mad

Not because, as some people say, they're poor corporate citizens. I don't buy that. But as a professional writer, I get irritated because the signs in the express checkout lanes are grammatically incorrect. "This lane for 20 items or less" the signs say. They should read, "20 items or fewer."

Last week I tried to explain to the cashier that when speaking of numbers of objects (i.e., items that can be counted), the proper word is fewer, not less. The word less should be used with quantities of mass, bulk, or volume. Examples: less time, fewer minutes; less coffee, fewer cups of coffee.

She just gave me a blank stare. So I'm organizing a nationwide campaign and I need your help. Write a letter to the president of Wal-Mart today and tell him to start using proper English. And if things don't change, I'm changing my mind. Wal-Mart is a poor corporate citizen after all!

Our Readers Are Writing!

Well, not exactly. We didn't get a single letter or e-mail this month. But we're not depressed. After all, this is our inaugural issue so there's nothing to write about.

However, we'd love to hear from you in the future! If you have questions and comments about writing, or if you want to share samples of bad writing, send them along. If they're of general interest, we'll ask for your permission to print them in a future issue.
